Snapdeal, one of India’s prominent e-commerce platforms, on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bhashini, established by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) within Digital India Corporation (DIC) to bring AI capabilities for multilingual landscape.
The partnership between Snapdeal and Bhashini will use AI to address the diverse linguistic landscape of India and make new solutions that can be used in many different languages, helping people understand and use digital services more easily. The MoU focuses on their commitment to advancing digital inclusivity in India.
Collaboration for Multilingual Capabilities
This strategic partnership leverages AI capabilities and language translation features to enhance the accessibility of digital services to users in over nine spoken languages.
“We look forward to combining Bhashini’s deep expertise in language solutions with Snapdeal’s robust e-commerce platform to empower individuals across diverse linguistic backgrounds,” said Himanshu Chakrawarti, CEO of Snapdeal.
The Snapdeal-Bhashini MoU is a promising step towards building an inclusive digital ecosystem in India. By breaking down language barriers, this partnership is set to power the e-commerce landscape too.
“We are committed to leveraging technology for the greater good and enabling inclusive digital experiences for all. Through innovative use of AI and voice-first technology, we are determined to break down barriers,” said Amitabh Nag, CEO of Bhashini.
Voice For India
Backed by the government of India, Bhashini has been constantly working towards bridging language barriers with the help of AI. Furthermore, through this platform, the government looks to develop a National Public Digital Platform for local languages, for creating services for all citizens.
Last year, Bhashini released IndicTrans2, an open-source, transformer-based multilingual model for high-quality translation across 22 Indian languages. Interestingly, the company is also open to collaborating with people working in this field. “Anyone and everyone building LLMs to serve the Indian market can get in touch with us, and we are open to partnering with them,” said Nag, in a previous interaction with AIM.
Recently, Bhashini also collaborated with Nasscom to launch the “Be our Sahayogi” program to crowdsource multilingual AI problem statements.
