India is one of the leading markets for analytics and data science services, and various data science vendors have seen significant growth over the last few years, as organisations across verticals are investing billions of dollars in data science and analytics to optimise their processes. In fact, despite the pandemic and the resulting quarter-long slowdown, the data science functions across organisations have not been significantly impacted, suggesting that data science and analytics are a mainstay of business processes and value generation. The pre-COVID numbers suggest that as of March 2020, the analytics function in India earned consolidated revenues of $35.9 Bn, a 19.5% growth in revenue over last year.
In the post-COVID world, companies are veering towards digital transformation to ensure business continuity – and the analytics and data science functions are playing a crucial role in this journey. As companies are looking to establish AI and Data Science capabilities, the market is further maturing, driving the need for data science vendors/service providers to facilitate the booming market.
Over the last few years, multiple vendors with unique capabilities in data science, have not just grown from small operations but also matured in terms of capabilities. Through this annual report on the Data Science service providers, Analytics India Magazine aims to provide detailed insights on the growth, penetration, and maturity of these players in the Indian market. It brings an insight into how the companies have grown over the last year based on the key attributes collected from these companies. The study comprises an analysis of all major data science vendors in the country and how they have been faring despite the pandemic.
Previous Years’s Reports
PeMa Quadrant
The Penetration and Maturity (PeMa) Quadrant by Analytics India Magazine is an industry benchmark of Data Science Capabilities. The benchmark measures key capabilities of leading data science and analytics service providers in terms of Penetration and Maturity; and plots the relative positions of the firms on the PeMa (Penetration and Maturity) Quadrant. Vendors with more mature capabilities and with the advantage of superior data science services and standardisation are plotted higher on the Quadrant or Matrix. This research carried out across the Indian data science market plots the relative positions of various enterprises across the Quadrant.
Market Definition
The Vendor Benchmark report analyses the leading data science vendors in India and assesses the Penetration & Maturity Index of Service Providers while providing strategic insights into their investments, go-to-market approaches and partnering techniques for forward-looking organisations and mid-sized firms.
Methodology
The vendor’s thought leadership and competency are measured over two key parameters— Pe (x) and Ma (y). A balance between both these parameters is essential to respond to a client’s business challenges and seize revenue opportunities. The more mature data science vendors are also ahead of the curve in terms of industries and geographies served. These vendors deliver comprehensive analytics and data science solutions that meet the growing demands of clients and at the same time, provide secure enterprise governance and control.
The study is a result of extensive primary and secondary research carried out across the market. The primary research details were collected by circulating a survey form across the companies. It also consists of entries received from the vendor-customer community.
The companies were surveyed and researched on several parameters such as the number of analytics employees, number of data scientists in the analytics team, number of clients served, new clients added in a year, number of repeat clients, sectors and geographies served, the attrition rate of employees, types of analytics services rendered, budget for analytics team, and revenue generated, among others. Each of these parameters is representative either of the maturity or penetration and were scored based on the inputs provided and the research conducted.
The PeMa Quadrant is plotted based on the Penetration and Maturity scores of the companies — hence the companies are placed in one of the four quadrants — Leaders, Seasoned Vendors, Challengers and Growth Vendors respectively.
The vendors that are not mentioned in the report either did not participate in the study or did not meet the minimum criteria to be scored and plotted on the PeMa quadrant.
Study Demographics
The study has been conducted on the data provided by over 40 analytics and data science vendors in the country. These companies include medium to large organisations that are anywhere between two to 25 years old. Unlike other industry research, this study is an indicator of analytics market dynamics.
Key Findings
Leaders
These are the vendors that have a strong market presence and showcase strong penetration and maturity across various verticals and at a global level. They are estimated to have double-digit growth and offer end-to-end analytics solutions, including strategy, solution design, implementation and execution. The Maturity dimension of these vendors suggests deep domain expertise in different industry verticals which makes them the frontrunners in the market. The Penetration dimension suggests a strong geographical footprint and diverse clients.
